He began running a couple of years back and today, he is an ultra-runner. Let us hear more from him about his inspiring journey.
Sunil, Welcome to RunAddicts- our Local Heroes: Inspiration series. Congrats on being selected as a Local hero for our RunAddicts Inspiration series.
Can you briefly introduce yourself?
I am working as IT consultant for SAP Labs and basically from Shimoga, settled in Bangalore.
I would love to know how you got into fitness?
It was not early, I started running at 20 or 21 but stopped in between due to work pressure and started gym by 2012, But road running started with RunAddicts and is still going on.
How long have you been running, and which are the events you have participated?
I participated in the 2017 November RunAddicts monthly run. It was a 3km run and after that, did my 1st event neb event 12.5Km. Post that, I have participated in Bangalore FM, Mumbai HM&FM, Malnad ultra, 12hrs stadium run.
Within 3 years, you have improved from a 3Km run to 82km Ultra. How did this happen, can you share your journey?
Strength Training and Yoga played a big role in my endurance build, Once I started losing weight with high intensity workouts at ABC fitness, I felt lighter while running and also at the same time strengthening my lower body and yoga for stretching and working on flexibility was an added advantage.
That is wonderful, A strong core is important for long distance running. What motivates you to keep it going?
I make sure I hit the gym at least 5 days a week, what made me to be regular is different workouts daily and one day dedicated to Yoga. At ABC fitness, we do group workouts, this motivate me more so I can push to good extent.
What are your 10K, HM and FM personal best timings?
10k – 50.34 HM – 1hr 59min FM – 4:36:18
How do you train for an event; can you share a few insights?
Weekdays: Monday to Thursday 10k and weekend Long runs, or I keep adding mileage. for example, if am doing FM I makes sure I do weekly mileage more than 50 and weekend long run will be incremental up to 35km.
Which is your most memorable running event and what makes it so special about it?
Malnad Ultra 50km because of its terrain and it is my first trail run which I finished within the cut-off time: 8hrs 40min against 9hrs.
How do you balance fitness, work, and personal life?
I plan strength training weekly 4 days and 1-day yoga in the evening, and Sunday usually spend time with family, it will be my rest day.
How has RunAddicts helped you?
RunAddicts is an amazing group. I am what am today, and all my achievements are due to RunAddicts.
Any specific running goals?
Not particularly any such goal, running has become a part of my daily routine.
What is your favourite running quote?
Run for good health.
What is your advice for beginners?
Do not push too much in the beginning, just start with brisk walk and then slowly start slow jogging. Thereafter you can increase the distance gradually to 5km and 10km.
