RunAddicts- Local Heroes: Inspiration series [Profile 9: Shilpa]

Consistency and commitment are a lethal combination. She makes her running look effortless, always learning and improving, getting better with every run. One of the rising stars of RunAddicts, Shilpa. She is our nutrition guru, thanks to her recent article (https://www.runaddicts.in/blog/nutrition-exercise-for-runners-shilpa/), it has inspired many of us to become conscious about what we eat and incorporate strength training into our workouts to become stronger runners.

Shilpa, Welcome to RunAddicts- our Local Heroes: Inspiration series. Congrats on being selected as a Local hero for our RunAddicts Inspiration series.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

A homemaker now, was previously working for Microland as Network Engineer. My husband is an IT professional & have a 11-year-old son.

I see that your husband has picked up running too, how has it been training together?

Yes, it has been good, we have gotten another reason to spend some time together, share knowledge about running & fitness. Also make some common friends.

When did your fitness journey begin?

I was a sport enthusiast in school & was part of relays & throwball team. I have always been inclined towards running.

When did the actual running start, and which are the events you have participated?

I have been running since 2017 & have participated in most of the NEB marathons, Trot, Kaveri trail Marathon & Malnad Ultra.

What are your 10K, HM and FM personal best timings?

10k – 57mins, HM – 2Hrs 10mins, FM – 5Hrs 25mins

How do you train for an event; can you share a few insights?

I try to achieve some mileage, do some uphill run, trail runs, strength workout, make an effort to have a balanced nutritious food, keep the body well hydrated & ensure to get a quality sleep.

What are your tips for faster recovery after a marathon or long run?

A balanced food, good quality sleep, following day should be a rest day, but indulge in some mobility workout or a walk.

What are the most common mistakes people do when it comes to eating and how to avoid them?

From my point of view, do not get stressed out when eating something out of proportion occasionally. Instead one must be mindful while eating.

I understand you are strict on nutrition but on a lighter note, which is one dessert/sweet that is hard for you to restrict?

I can binge on Jamun & Corner House’s Cake Fudge 😋

Well, that was two.

Your most memorable running event and what makes it so special about it?

Shilpa: First Ultra 50k Run near Ravishankar Ashram, which made me know my strength & weakness.

What is your reflection from this run?

it was just my instinct act to run a 50k when I had not even done a full marathon, but still I took this plunge & somehow, I could finish within the cut off time. However, I felt that just the mental strength & some training is not enough. So, post this I started concentrating on strength workouts & proper food intake along with running.

How do you balance fitness, work, and personal life?

Shilpa: I being an organised person helps me prioritise my activities, also I try to have a disciplined lifestyle and most important support from family.

How has RunAddicts helped you?

One of the best things happened, it has given a different perspective to my life, socialising with Runaddict members, discussing healthy lifestyle with a coffee in Kappi Katte 😜. Most important, met my running buddies Ashwini & Savitha with whom I have run many Marathons & many more to come.

Any specific running goals?

To run for life.

What is your favourite running quote?

I Never Dreamed I Would Be A Super Cool Mom, But Here I am Killing It.

What is your advice for beginners?

Maintain Consistency & Discipline.

Thank you, Shilpa, it was wonderful interacting with you. Podium finishes are just a few steps away, continue your hard work and enjoy running. I wish you a lot of success in your fitness journey.
